What's in our Beauty Bag

When it comes to make-up, every girl needs to have a few favourites in her handbag. Whether's it's a lip balm or a foundation.

Here's looking at some of the newest releases in the beauty industry - some that are seriously rocking our world, umm we mean, our beauty bags.

Winter days are meant for rich reds, plums, and burgundy lipsticks. Now is your chance to play with darker lip colors and this one from YSL is perfect for the season! It's creamy and moisturising consistency will keep your lips moist and its nice pigment will keep your lips fabulous!

The cold long winter days can make your lips dry and chapped. The limited edition Baby Lips Dr. Rescue is medicated so it will keep your lips hydrated all day. Plus it has natural tints that will give your lips a warm colour.

By the time winter comes along, many of us would have lost the tans that we acquired over the summer. This blush and bronzer duo is the perfect set to give you some colour and glow during the dark dreary days of winter.

A staple for every girl is a good foundation. The foundation compact from Nars' compact foundation is a great foundation for the winter because it's soft, hydrating and goes on smoothly. Also a added bonus is that it helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and enhances the skins radiance.

Winter Special: Beauty Pick-Me-Up

When your morning latte doesn't just do justice, that's when you need to attack your make-up drawer and make your face presentable enough to step out of the house in.

Say ba-bye to the winter blues by these lovely beauty products that may just make you want to get out of the blanket. Maybe.

Bronzer
Aside from giving you the perfect cheekbones and a glowy look, bronzer is a make-up artist's hidden treasure. If blended well into the high points of your face - the light-reflecting angles - it can make you look like you have the cheekbones of Angelina Jolie. And if all else fails, fake it until you make it. Buy some fake tanning lotions and have a tanning session in your bathroom, while it snows outside.
Here are some tips to follow when applying foundation this winter:

  • Prep the skin with foundation first, or even BB cream, if you're going for a more casual look. Without a base, bronzer could go patchy.
  • Use a big blush brush and dust bronzer over your cheekbones, along the jaw and hairline. Don't forget the area under your chin, as that's the lightest area on your face.
  • Now use a slightly more shimmery bronzer, or an illuminator if you fancy those, and apply a little on the high points of your cheekbone and on the apple of your cheeks, for instant shine and glow.

Blush
Nothing says fresh and bright like a dab of pink on the apple of the cheek. Go for a matte, cream-based blush, as that won't leave your skin dry when you're walking against the chilly winter wind. There are studies that prove that a hint of colour on the cheeks have helped made other people's days better. OK, maybe not, but hey, we dare you to try.

Our Favourite Products: Blush in Afternoon Tea by Topshop; Estee Lauder Pure Color Blush; Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips & Cheek.

Red lipstick
"Beauty, to me, is being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick," said Gwyneth Paltrow in an interview once. And there couldn't be more truer words spoken from this kale-munching Hollywood mumma. Red lipstick has the magical power to make your day seem a 100 times better - be it a strawberry hue or a cherry red. It's the anatomy of the shade that just screams, 'Smile! It's a good day'. Even if you want to go bare minimum on the rest of the face, a tint of red on the pucker is enought to make a dreadful day look like a warm summer night.

Our Favourite Products: Max Factor Colour Collection in English Rose; Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick; Chantecaille Hydra Chic in Persimmon.

Tip: Swap the mascara for eyeliner this winter - mainly because you'll never know when it might rain or snow. You don't want to be caught in a downpour with panda eyes, now do you?

Iconemesis’s 2013 Beauty Gift Guide

By: Shitika Anand

Christmas is 15 sleeps away (who’s counting?) and the panic radar is soaring high. The holiday season rush is keeping us far away from venturing out to the shops, and the empty boxes under the Christmas tree are starting to scare us.
If you’re yet to tick off presents for those women in your life who believe in boosting their outer beauty just as much as their inner selves, then this beauty-themed gift guide is for you. We’ll allow you to consider it your bible for the next fortnight.
If you ever wanted to store the Christmas spirit and delight in a bottle, invest in his Limited Edition cologne by Jo Malone. It’s smells like freshly picked rose petals rubbed in with the crimson juices of pomegranate and seduced with a slight touch of oak as the base note. A little secret – you don’t even need to gift-wrap this one, it comes in a beautiful traditional black box.

Who says nail art is only for Beiber-obsessed teenage girls? Popularised by pop artists like Lily Allen and Adele, nail art is this past year’s most talked-about beauty trend and we predict that it’s coming along with us in the New Year. This holiday season, pamper your fashion-conscious aunt with this at-home manicure set that might help her decide her NYE outfit.

Your sister enjoys the bath more than she enjoys spending time with you? Get her this luxurious bath and body set and she might just love you forever. It’s got a beautiful body wash, bath crème, body butter, body polish and hand cream, all fragranced with rose and geranium flowers. This will make the bathroom look and smell rather luxe.

4)    Bev Ridge and Friends Ladies Hip Flask and LipGloss
This is the perfect present for your little sister, who’s just turned 21 and is still holding on tight to her teenage years while battling the dramas of her adult life. This flask and lipgloss combo will not just look beautiful gift-wrapped but is extremely functional for her 21st year. We love it!

5)    MAC Stroke of Midnight Face Palette Warm
A 20-something woman can never have enough eye shadow palettes in her make-up drawer, I think we will all agree to this? Add this Limited Edition holiday special by MAC to the collection and enjoy this beautiful nude palette with a bit of glitter for this party season.

6)    Soap & Glory I’m Your Manicure Gift Set
We can’t expect you to be making all those holiday calls and serving those endless glasses of champagne with ungroomed nails, right? Hence why, you need this manicure companion to solve all cuticle-related dilemmas. It has everything, really, everything you need to groom your digits.

7)    Iconemesis Unicorn phone cover by Gemma Correll
This is an ideal present for someone who has everything; gift it as it is or add as a bonus present with another beauty loot. This phone cover is dreamy, full of holiday spirit and we assure it will make you believe in miracles… a Christmas miracle!
